Avast 2017 line of antivirus products has new features to protect against zero-day attacks, improved protection of personal data and passwords, new detection and security features for home networks, and Game Mode
Avast Software, the global leader in antivirus products for consumer and enterprise environments, today, February 7, 2017, announces the release of a new family of free and commercial antivirus products, Avast 2017.
Avast 2017 solutions get an improved antivirus engine, the benefits of advanced cloud analysis, improved threat detection speed and additional layers of protection against cybercriminal activity. The new features and improvements are available across all Avast 2017 products and are designed to repel zero-day attacks, monitor activity tracking attempts and financial data theft, protect passwords, and offer an innovative Game Mode for full gameplay without interruption.
Robust threat detection, new security features
This is the first release of Avast products since its acquisition by AVG in September 2016. Avast antiviruses have received security technologies from both vendors, allowing them to provide effective comprehensive protection against various types of threats. All products in the Avast 2017 line, namely Avast Free Antivirus, Avast Pro Antivirus, Avast Internet Security and Avast Premier, include the following new features and improvements:
CyberCapture: Avast’s proprietary intelligent scanning technology has become faster at identifying and isolating unknown threats in real time. CyberCapture isolates unknown files into a secure cloud environment for deeper sample examination and automatically establishes a two-way communication with Avast Threat Labs for faster detection. More than 10,000 new files are analyzed every day with CyberCapture, and in most cases it takes 5 minutes or less to obtain an opinion.
Behavioral Screen: This new feature constantly monitors for suspicious activity among running programs and protects users from zero-day threats, malware and spyware that cannot be detected by traditional detection methods. The Behavior Screen is particularly effective against ransomware Trojans.
Game Mode: Game Mode automatically detects when a game is running and automatically optimizes itself to eliminate any notifications or interruptions in order to free up system resources for improved game performance. Game Mode automatically stops all alerts and background processes and disrupts Windows Update Center processes and notifications.
Avast Passwords: Avast Passwords has been redesigned for Windows and Mac computers – making it easier and safer to control and store passwords. The component stores user passwords in a secure vault protected by a master password and, when unlocked, automatically fills in the information needed to log in to the account. In the Premium version, password leak notification is available, as well as unlocking passwords on your computer from your phone.
Wi-Fi Inspector: Avast Wi-Fi Inspector was first introduced in 2014 as a Home Network Security feature. Now the tool has a new name and numerous improvements. Wi-Fi Inspector automatically scans user networks for vulnerable devices to fix security issues with step-by-step troubleshooting instructions.
This is an important layer of protection at a time when large botnet networks, such as the Mirai botnet, are successfully attacking IoT devices and routers, leaving users’ home networks vulnerable despite the robust security of Windows and Mac computers.
Passive mode: this mode allows advanced users to run two antivirus programs simultaneously so that selected features of each solution can be shared without compromising performance or having to uninstall or reinstall products. As a result, the user can use Avast with another antivirus program.
New versions of Avast 2017 antivirus launch after the release of the new AVG product line in January 2017. Both product families have benefited from the combination of two analytical labs and an increased threat detection network.
The Avast network is the largest in the world and uses cloud-based detection modules and artificial intelligence technologies to access 400 million computers that work as sensors to detect and neutralize threats in real time. AVG behavioral analysis technology is now integrated into Avast 2017 products for more robust threat detection.
Avast Software CEO Vince Steckler states: “This rapid release of new Avast and AVG products after combining our teams and technologies is a very significant achievement for us. Each product family gained the best of Avast and AVG’s capabilities to improve detection efficiency and provide reliable protection.
This required not only solid teamwork, but also our commitment to securing IoT devices, which are increasingly the target of attacks. Our successful track record in developing machine learning and artificial intelligence technology now enables us to identify and remediate threats on an unprecedented scale to protect more than 400 million customers worldwide.”
